Hello. We're artists working through collaborative social practice and creative research to understand the ways in which locality is shaped and enacted in the city.

Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Day 3 of our Extended Field Trip #001 in Peterborough at Artspace was filled with design, math, and construction. Having decided that the general sense of the city is that “everything is OK,” we moved forward on printing posters and building some text that will be on display for the opening Friday night.

We had many adventures in carpentry today and I think this is just the beginning of working on some more projects of this scale.

The day started with another walk around town to get our posters printed that also read, “Everything is OK.”

The river / creek that runs under the downtown has apparently caused some considerable damage due to flooding. Josh and I had thought it was quite amazing to walk between streets and have this water rushing through, but it hadn’t convinced us that a canal in Windsor is a great idea.

One way to deal with alleys—make them into thoroughfares.

IMG 0261 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

This stretch is kind of an alley, with brickwork for the pathway and leading to a parking garage.

some more graffiti.

Gradients and solids.

Diagrams for our letters.

Brainstorming notes.

IMG 3557 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Records of conversations—70% of the people you see downtown are residents of downtown.

Rows of chairs and our workspace.

The tape measure that came in very handy today.

Josh measuring.

IMG 3566 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

And measuring some more and taking notes.

IMG 3571 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Back out of the basement, Josh crunching the numbers.

IMG 3574 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

He figured out the length of wood we needed for each and every letter. At first we were thinking of making each letter 40″ high, which would have doubled our material needs.

IMG 3576 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Ultimately, we settled on letters 20″ high, which works out a lot better.

IMG 3581 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Nearing his final calculations.

IMG 3584 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Measuring the wall to make sure the text would all fit.

IMG 3585 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Back to the drawing board for a bit more then off to Home Depot.

IMG 0268 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Then off to Home Depot to buy an 85′ roll of Christmas Lights.

IMG 3587 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

A quick sketch of our letter E.

IMG 3588 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Josh first tried staples to keep the letters together.

IMG 3593 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Ultimately though, we figured we needed to go with braces and screws.

IMG 3595 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Counting the braces for each letter and checking our math one last time.

IMG 3599 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Down in the basement after our first few cuts—we have the letter E and I.

IMG 3602 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Our tools.

IMG 3603 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Some more letters after progress.

IMG 3606 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

The saw set up on a plexiglass case. I manned the saw for the most part, not trusting my mathematical side of my brain.

IMG 3608 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Josh working out the details for some of the more elaborate angles we would need for our letters.

IMG 3611 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

In the sunlight working on the letter K.

IMG 3613 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Working above some of the squared off letters helped us with the angles on others.

IMG 3614 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

The V was kind of tough to figure out at first.

IMG 3615 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

This is the letter R waiting for its small angled leg.

Josh working on the bracing up until the minute our little town hall meeting began.

IMG 3625 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Our town hall meeting, trying to get to the bottom of what makes Peterborough work.

IMG 3627 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

By the end of our conversation it seemed like we had figured out that it’s this kind of entrepreneurial spirit that spans beyond just business ventures that makes the community work well and generally band together.

IMG 3636 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Some of the results of the town hall meeting.

IMG 3637 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Things considered to be good about Peterborough.

IMG 3638 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

More good, red is bad.

IMG 3639 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

The public meeting and unified voice were big important ideas—things that need to be translated back to Windsor.

IMG 3640 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Leadership in the artistic community was also an important one.

IMG 3641 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Josh’s notes, always so much more legible.

IMG 3642 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

A lot more legible and easier to link together.

IMG 3644 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Some of the bigger ideas.

IMG 3628 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

After the town hall, back to work on the letters.

IMG 3629 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Iga and Josh set about bracing the letters.

IMG 3647 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Bracing the Y – the Y was a real work of art on its own.

Levelling with a laser.

IMG 3666 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Some more text to play with, maybe tomorrow.

IMG 3664 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

The leftovers.

IMG 3662 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Josh finalizing the laser line.

IMG 3663 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

All the letters completed.

IMG 3655 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

OK.

IMG 3656 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

Josh on the ladder.

IMG 3657 Extended Field Trip Day 3: Construction

The E waiting to go up. As I type this, the letters are now all up, but we still need to mount the lights, so that photo will have to wait.

Tomorrow is the opening for our show, it should be awesome!!!

  1. Danielle says:

We should start compiling a systematic, categorized interview schematic, so that our data between cities (as BCL has started to chart outside of Windsor) can be weighed equally against one another, providing more accurate thresholds.

I am so happy it was so successful!

    • Justin says:

Ooohhhhh I like this idea of arranging some kind of template or sorts that would allow us to compare data between cities, as we hopefully will get to do this again at some point. I think being able to make those comparisons will be really important!!! Good call!
