Come & Visit Windsor: Emerging Artist Residency at UWindsor’s School of Visual Arts

The University of Windsor’s School for Arts and Creative Innovation offers a one-month Emerging Artist Research Residency. This program is an opportunity for emerging artists to cultivate new ideas through research and production, access the school’s resources and facilities, and exploration of arts and culture in the border region of Windsor/ Detroit.

Resources available include; Sculpture Studio and equipment, Multi media, Woodshop, and much more. Each resident artist will present their work in the form of a public lecture for the Artist-In-Residence Speaker Series at the University of Windsor.

Application Deadline: January 15, 2013 (post marked).

2013 residency program dates: May 1- 31.

Submission Materials and Guidelines:

– C.V.
– Artist Statement (1 page max)
– Residency Intent (1 page max)
– 10 Images on CD, Mac compatible (768 x 1024 dpi)
– Image list

Residency program fee is $350. All applications will be considered. Individual application feedback will not be provided. Please note that the residency program does not include accommodation, although the Program Coordinator can assist with information.

Help Wanted: Ad-hoc volunteer studio assistant

We’re looking for an ad-hoc volunteer studio assistant to help us do some or all of the following:

-Visual and archival research
-Building and making things
-Silk screening
-Scanning and archiving
-Basic print and/or web design
-Materials research
-General office assistance
-Installation assistance

In return for your one or two day a week time commitment, we offer the following:

-Fun and free coffee
-Experience in a professional artist-run-centre and collective
-An eclectic mix of background music including jazz, hip hop, and metalcore
-Dangerously good reference letters
-Invaluable learning opportunities that will help you make more art, be an incredibly good organizer, and maybe even get you into grad school

Preferred Qualifications:

-High school diploma, first-year University/College, or otherwise very mature
-Incredibly punctual
-Drivers license and access to a vehicle
-General care and attention to detail
-Very positive and helpful attitude
-Focused
-Self-directed
-Well organized
-Experience with power tools and/or Adobe Creative Suite

Start Date: As soon as possible
End Date: End of April 2013 (with possible contract renewal)

1W3KND: Call for Submissions for a New Writing Residency

We want to invite you to participate in our new residency program, 1W3KND aimed at developing essays, interviews, manifestos, critiques, reviews, and other texts around ideas of collaboration, socially engaged works, artist-run culture, and public practices. We’re hoping to publish these in one form or another some time next year.

There have been a number of books released over the past year discussing socially-engaged practices (here’s a list of a few of our favourites), but we’re really interested in reading more from artists themselves, especially those in the earlier stages of their career. We think there’s a need to make more time to write through the ideas, questions, and concerns that come through engaging in these kinds of practices, and we’re hoping we can help to accommodate those interested in doing that writing.

As part of this project, and in the spirit of fostering more collaboration, we’ll also try to pair you with another applicant. If you already have someone who you’d like to come with though, please just make a note of it in the form below.

We can’t offer a fee, but we can offer to cover your travel up to $250, and a place to stay at CIVIC SPACE for a weekend.

The Design Studio has extended their commission for an artist/culinary team interested in designing a week-long open Public Kitchen in September or October.  The new deadline for applications is August 16th.

The commissioned team will get:

  • $4,000 commission, plus $1000 budget
  • A space near Uphams Corner for their installation of the Public Kitchen
  • A built brick stove from Bread Oven
  • Free fruits and vegtables from Fair Foods

BCL Report: February 24, 2011 (back to Lebel)

We spent Friday back at Lebel, reminding us of the meetings we used to have a couple years ago when all this was just starting up. Given the size of the school and the resources readily available (like tools, multiple desks, ample light), we split up into smaller groups to tackle some “next steps” for each project on the table.

SRSI Call for Submissions Closes Today!

TODAY is the last day to submit to the Storefront Residencies for Social Innovation. If you’ve already submitted, rest-assured that we have received your proposal.

We’ll be sending out one big email to acknowledge all submissions sometime tomorrow and then we’ll proceed to go through all of them and narrow them down hopefully within a couple weeks.

If we need any images or your CV or anything like that attached to your email submission as supplementary information — if we need it, we’ll ask you for it in a followup email. We just want your amazingly great ideas at this point!!!

Call for Proposals: The Storefront Residencies for Social Innovation

The Storefront Residencies for Social Innovation invites the radical re-imagining of the possibilities for economic stimulus and process-driven practice, situating those very possibilities in the heart of Windsor in vacant storefronts.

Facilitated by Broken City Lab, the Storefront Residencies for Social Innovation will call on artists, writers, designers, entrepreneurs, not-for-profits, hobby shops, restauranteurs, librarians, musicians, architects, archivists, and other interested parties to occupy a space in downtown Windsor for up to one month in June and July 2010.

The residencies will attempt to intervene with the everyday realities of skyrocketing vacancy rates, failing economic strategies, and a population of people who are continually losing hope for their city.

Details: We will provide a space for you to use, some very modest fees and resources to pull off your project, and a lot of enthusiasm. While we are open to proposals from anyone, preference will be given to Ontario-based persons. If you’re an artist working in a socially-engaged practice, we’d be especially interested to hear from you. Any questions: info@brokencitylab.org.

The residencies will take place here in Windsor, Ontario in June and July 2010.
